HOW IS SILK PRODUCED?

Silk is created by the silkworm, the larval stage of the silk moth, Bombyx mori. These silkworms feed exclusively on mulberry leaves and spin delicate cocoons around themselves as they develop into chrysalises.

The process of cultivating silkworms to produce silk is known as sericulture. It involves carefully nurturing the worms from eggs through to the cocoon stage. Before the moth emerges, the chrysalis is removed to preserve the continuous silk filament and prevent it from breaking.

Each cocoon can yield approximately 1,000 to 2,000 feet of silk thread. Producing just one yard of silk fabric typically requires around 3,000 cocoons.

THE 9 STEPS OF THE PRODUCTION

1. Silkworm breeding
2. Feeding the larva mulberry tree leaves
3. Silkworm spinning the cocoon encasing itself
4. Stoving the chrysalis with heat to ensure the silk filament does not break
5. Sorting and softening the cocoon.
6. Reeling the filament into one long continuous thread.
7. Forming silk yarn by throwing or twisting the reeled silk.
8. De-gumming thrown yearn to achieve distinctive softness and shine by soaking in warm soapy water
9. Finishing silk fabrics through dyeing and weaving.
