Celebrating 180 years
Sir Charles Lloyd Jones Exhibition
As we celebrate our 30th anniversary this year at Boyac, so do our cousins David Jones who are celebrating their 180th. David Jones is honouring this with an exhibition of paintings from Sir Charles Lloyd Jones’ collection, displayed in the windows of the Sydney City stores of David Jones.
Sir Charles Lloyd Jones ran the David Jones company from 1920 until his death in 1958, however had a true passion and skill in painting. Trained as an artist, he continued to produce works throughout his lifetime while balancing the demands of the flourishing department store as well as holding numerous public positions. His contribution to the arts went beyond his practice, founding the David Jones’ Art Gallery, co-founding Art in Australia, as well as being a patron to countless Australian artists, including Sir William Dobell OBE.
“Sir Charles Lloyd Jones was first and foremost an artist, not only when he sat at the canvas but in all he said or did.”
– Prime Minister Sir Robert Menzies
The artistic achievement of Sir Charles Lloyd Jones will be on display for a short time from this weekend to commemorate the 180th celebration, a testament to the company’s successful history and importance to Australia.
